Moondrop
Chengdu, Sichuan, China · founded 2015
Moondrop is arguably the most influential "Chi-Fi" brand: it popularized measurement-driven, target-curve-based tuning (its VDSF target, closely related to the Harman/diffuse-field research) across the budget and mid-fi IEM market, and demonstrated that a small independent Chinese maker could set the reference standard reviewers benchmark against. It matters to the independent audio world for pushing high-value, transparently-tuned IEMs from ~$20 to summit-fi while remaining founder-led and not conglomerate-owned.
Moondrop is an independent Chinese audio manufacturer operating under the legal entity Chengdu Shuiyueyu Technology Co., Ltd. (水月雨, “water moon rain”), founded in 2015 and headquartered in Chengdu, China. It is best known for in-ear monitors tuned to its proprietary VDSF (Virtual Diffuse Sound Field) target response, and it also produces headphones, true wireless earbuds, portable DAC/amps, portable CD players, and audio accessories. The company operates a roughly 4,000-square-meter production facility in Chengdu with a dust-free workshop and a Klippel acoustic-testing lab, and sells across 20+ countries; in 2021 the China Electronic Audio Association named it one of the “Top 10 Hi-Fi headphones and digital audio brands in China.”
